What, if any, will enhanced EPA regulations have on Texas’ energy industry?  Turns out the answer depends where you look.

On May 11, ERCOT – Electric Reliability Council of Texas – published a report concluding that new EPA regulations would have an insignificant impact on forcing coal-fired power plants to shut down unless, “a combination of low natural gas prices and carbon emission fees significantly reduce the economic viability of these units.”  Read the study here.

In contrast – and in our effort at Power Across Texas to explore all sides of an issue – The Brattle Group found evidence that EPA regulations would result in approximately 13 GW of coal plant retirements in Texas, and over 50,000 MW of coal plant retirements and up to $180 billion in compliance costs nation wide.  To view this report and presentation, click here.
